Elwood Howell

- Elwood Lewis Howell, age 93 of 50 Howell Rd. died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at his residence. He was at native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late George Watson and Florence Kuykendall Howell. He is preceded in death by one son at birth, Elwood Lewis Howell, Jr., two brothers, and two sisters. Mr. Howell was a United States Army Veteran of WWII and served in the Philippines as a Staff Sgt. He was employed in the Finishing Room at Champion Industries for 40 years, retiring in 1976. He was the oldest member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church and served as a former Sunday School Superintendent. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nannie C. Howell of Canton, one daughter Judy Hyatt and her husband Alex of Clyde, one sister Hilda Gantt of Canton, one brother Arnold Howell of Canton, three grandsons, Robbie Hyatt of Greenville, SC, Jason Hyatt and his wife Kerrie of Canton, Blake Hyatt of Canton and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ryleigh. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Reverends Carl Chastain and Chris Jennings officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Monday, May 9, 2005 at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
