Elwyna Long

Waynesville, NC-Elwyna "Wendy" Lewis Long, age 63, died Sunday, December 5, 2004 after a brief illness. A native of Deridder, Louisiana, she moved to Haywood County in 1997 from Shreveport, LA where she had resided for 27 years. She was the daughter of Dorothy Crager Lewis of Shreveport, LA and the late Audle Lewis and was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Long who died in 2002. She received her nursing degree from Mather School of Nursing in New Orleans and was employed by several hospitals as an RN for more than 30 years. After her retirement, she volunteered at Good Samaritan Clinic in Canton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville and served on various committees. She was also a member of Tuesday morning bible study and the Reach and Teach Sunday School Class. She was an avid gardener and loved giving plants to her friends. She was a member and past president of the Richland Garden Club. In addition to her mother, Dorothy Lewis, she is survived by a son, James Eric Long and his wife, Michelle, of bossier City, LA; a daughter, Laura Cherie Long of Huntsville, AL; a sister, Brenda Prudhomme, of Haughton, LA; and a grandson, Charles Marshall Long. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville chapel with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend Dr. Jack C. Bishop, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Al Long, Frank Brantley, John Gambrell, Bill Hartley, Gerald Crager, and George Lattimer. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Vann and Vernon Long.
