Candler ' Elzie Martin Phillips Lewis, 86, of Pisgah Hwy, Candler, NC passed away peacefully, Nov. 28, 2010 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Lewis was born Jan. 24, 1924 in Franklin, NC. She was a long time resident of Swain County and she and her husband, Bill, lived in Maryville, Tenn. for ten years. Mrs. Lewis worked in the textile industry from 1962 and retired in 1986. She was a member of the Candler Church of God, an avid gardener who loved flowers and always had the most glorious varieties for all to appreciate and enjoy. Mrs. Lewis was also a very talented and creative seamstress who made beautiful quilts, pillows and wall hangings treasured by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers; Kermit and Claude Martin, three sisters; Ester Bohanon, Chloe Burnette, Kate May and a step-son; Tommy Lewis.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Billy J. (Bill) Lewis, three daughters, Clara Phillips Wiggins and husband Carl of Monroe, NC, Joann Phillips Sitton and late husband Tom Sitton of Candler, NC and Wanda Phillips Wiggins and husband Blake of Monroe, NC, seven grandchildren, Chris and John Wiggins, Missy W. Freund, Kimberly S. Burdett, Eric Sitton, Joy and Tony Wiggins; seven great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday (today) at Moore Funeral Home at Forest Lawn's Chapel of Faith, with Rev. Ron Towe officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from Noon until the service.
