Emily Penney

March 14, 1921 — December 9, 2003

Waynesville-Louise Potts Penney, age 82, of 237 Rolling Green Drive, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Durham County, NC, she had resided most of her life in Durham and had lived in Haywood County for the past six years. She was the daughter of the late James and Ruby Morgan Potts and was also preceded in death by her husband, John Penny, who died December 17, 2001; two brothers, Frank and Phillip Potts; and a grandson, Baine McElroy. She had been employed as a photo-processor for Strawbridge Studios of Durham. She enjoyed making a pleasant home for her husband. In addition, she enjoyed baking and floral designing and reading her Bible. She was a member of Greystone Baptist Church in Durham and attended First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.

She is survived by two daughters, Jo Anne McElroy, and her husband, Bill, of Waynesville and Terri Matthews and her husband, Rabun, of St. Simons Island, Georgia; a grandson, Cal McElroy, of Tampa, Florida; a special life-long friend, Mildred Hester, of Durham. She also enjoyed a special relationship with Myrna Campbell of Waynesville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring in Durham, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Open Door Soup Kitchen, 242 Commerce Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
