Emma Douglas

December 23, 1928 — February 17, 2016

Maggie Valley, Emma Frances "Fran" Douglas, age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2016. A native of Leesburg, Florida and raised in Weirsdale, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beulah Douglas. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roland Barnett "Bo" Douglas; three brothers, Therrell, Johnny and Edwin Douglas; her eldest grandson, Brandon Michelle. Fran met her husband "Bo" and they married in 1950 after she graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee (when it was a women's teaching college) with a degree that spanned 30 years teaching elementary school in Marion County, Florida. Fran and Bo were blessed with two children and the family lived in Ocala, Florida until their vacation home in Maggie Valley, North Carolina became their retirement destination. It was in the Smoky Mountains where she learned to quilt and this hobby became her passion. Over the years Fran gave quilting lessons to friends and church groups. One of her favorite sayings to her students was "Let the fabric speak to you." When she wasn't teaching, she was home with Bo, enjoying the mountains, the "creek" and each other. When Bo passed away in 1999, she remained on their mountain quilting, giving classes and enjoying her wide circle of friends and neighbors. In 2011, due to health concerns, she moved to San Antonio, Texas to be closer to family. The world is a better place because of Fran. She always made the act of giving seem effortless, just part of her everyday life as a mother, a wife, a friend, a teacher and quilter. She was blessed with countless friends over the years and a loving family. Fran is survived by her son, Michael Douglas, and his wife, Joanne; one daughter, Sandy Masiel, and her husband, Paul; grandchildren, Jason Douglas, and his wife, Lauren, Julianne Douglas, Dianna Seibert, and her husband, Kevin, Collin Masiel, Amy Edwards, and her husband, Brad, great-grandchildren, Ethan, Jacob, Brandon, Kinsley, Aubry, Cooper, Madison, Cameron and Kayden. The family is grateful to the outpouring of prayers, love and concern by her friends and relatives. A funeral service to celebrate Fran's life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Peachtree Methodist Church in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. A luncheon will follow hosted by the ladies of her church, with whom she shared countless hours of fellowship. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that all tributes be given to Maggie Valley Fire Department, 2901 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751, in honor of Fran.
