Emma Vance

Emma LaNell Hardin Roberts Vance, age 88, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2010 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Mary Rhodarmer Hardin. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husbands; Walter Roberts, and John Vance; a grandson, Tracy Lane Roberts; a sister, Mildred Whitman; and two brothers, Glenn and Halmon Hardin. Nell was a charter member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Mack Roberts and his wife, Sharon, of Waynesville; a daughter, Mary Lou Brock of Asheville; four grandchildren, Danny Brock of Asheville, Jennifer Milner of Canton, Tamatha Towe, and Michelle Whitmire both of Asheville; an honorary grandson, Jimmy Smathers of Canton; and five great-grandchildren, Justin Milner, Triston Towe, Colt Brock, Elexis Towe, and Gabriella Whitmire. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Piney Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bill Cranfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Piney Grove Cemetery Maintenance Fund, 986 Country Club Drive, c/o Johnny Woody, Canton, NC 28716.
