Canton-Erasmus D. Herndon, Jr. - age 88 of 635 Allen Farm Road died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Britthaven of Clyde.
He was born January 12, 1916 at Smoaks, S.C. His parents were the late Amelia Kinsey and Erasmus Duncan Herndon, Sr. He was also preceded in death by six brothers; Andrew, Norman, Walter, George, William and Harris; four sisters, Annie Metrokon, Harriet Rowe, Inez Majors and Marie Ray and one granddaughter, Melody Louise Carpenter. Mr. Herndon was married to Louise Hutchinson Herndon May 7, 1939 in Gaffney S.C. He was a former member of Civitan Club and D.O.K.K. Club, former member of the NC National Guard where he served as 5th Class Specialist, former vice president of the pulp and chemical department of Champion Papers Local 507 Union. He retired from
Champion International with 39 years of service. He was active in church work at Calvary Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the board of deacons for ten years, taught the men's Bible class for 40 years, sang in the choir for 30 years, BTU director for 6 years, chairman of the church constitutional committee for 3 years and also served 5 years as chairman of the church finance committee. He joined Sunny Point Baptist Church in 1974 and served one year as youth director, deacon, taught men's Bible class some and was a choir member. His favorite job was greeting people, giving out the bulletin , giving chewing gum to children and serving on several committees. He volunteered for meals on wheels for 12 years and was a member of the Joy Club and "Snug Harbor".
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Hutchinson Herndon of Canton, one daughter and her husband, Anita and Jim Eller of Candler, one son and his wife, Philip Duncan and Mary Wines Herndon of Canton, three grandchildren, Grant Carpenter, Rhonda Burris and Laura Blaylock and five great-grandchildren; Melody Sloan Carpenter, Emily and Savannah Blaylock, and Miranda and Dylen Burris.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend James Roberts, Reverend Bill Terrell and Reverend Jarvis Teague officiating. Burial will follow at Sunny Point Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
