"God's Warrior" Canton – Erma Long Layman, age 89, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Haven Hospice in Orange Park, Florida. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of James Marvin Long, Sr. and Lela Henson Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis L. Layman, who died in 1997; a sister, Anna Mae Long Blaylock; one baby brother, and a son-in-law, Stephen D. Mooney. Erma had a love for flea marketing. For over 20 years, she had a booth at the Franklin Flea Market known as Erma's Old and New. She made many lasting friendships over those years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church nearly all of her life and sang in the choir up until about a year ago. Erma loved the Lord Jesus Christ and made a point to make sure she witnessed for him every day. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanelle Layman Mooney of Orange Park, Florida; three brothers, James Marvin Long, Jr. and his wife, Linda, Armon Henson Long and his wife, Betty Jo, and Norman Long, all of Canton; two grandchildren, Heather Mooney Stirratt and her husband, Tom, of Eagan, Minnesota, and Heath Ian Mooney and his wife, Cheri, of Ponte Vedra, Florida; five great-grandchildren, Hogan, Grace and Ryan Stirratt, and Ian and Nya Mooney; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday May 30, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Christian Higher Education Fund of Bethel Baptist Church, 5868 Pigeon Road, Canton, NC 28716. Erma loved the Lord and was a warrior for him. Through this fund, her legacy will live on.
