Canton-Ernest Lee Mathis, age 77, of Pisgah Drive passed away Friday, May 14, 2004 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a son of the late Orville and Annie Parks Mathews and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Allen and Anna Belle Smathers. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and was a Deacon, sang in the choir and served on numerous committees in the church. He enjoyed fishing and camping and was a United States Navy veteran having served in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carlene West "Cotton" Mathis, two daughters, Carolyn McCracken and her husband Bob of Clyde and Patty Lindsey and her husband Gary of Clyde, one son, Alan B. Mathis and his wife Denise of Waynesville, one brother, James Mathis of Canton and 5 grandchildren, Missy Redditt and her husband Trey, Stacy Lindsey, Wesley Lindsey and his wife Christy, David and Daniel Tripp. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004 at Spring Hill Baptist Church. Reverend Stacy Hightower and Reverend Wayne Willett will officiate. Pallbearers will be grandsons and Jack Rhinehart, Ronnie Pace, Manuel Buchanan and Gary Henson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. Mr. Mathis will lie in state in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1918 Murray Road, Canton, NC 28716.
