Ernest Phillips, born on May 2, 1935, in Hartford, Tennessee, passed away on March 13, 2025, at Smoky Mountain Health and Rehab. A devoted family man, Ernest was a loving father and brother, and he leaves behind cherished memories for his surviving relatives.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Phillips Bryson and her husband Vince; one sister, Colene Rogers; one brother, Mitchell Phillips and his wife Suzi. He was also a proud grandfather to his two grandchildren, Stephanie White and her husband Christopher, and Anthony Gaetano. In addition, he is survived by his two great-grandsons, Carson Conard White and Eli Christopher White, two step-grandchildren, Andrew Bryson and Samantha Bryson, as well as one step-great-granddaughter, Evie Rae Bryson.
Ernest's professional journey began as a machine operator at Champion Paper, where he dedicated 30 years before entering retirement. Following his retirement, he took on a role with Haywood County Solid Waste, where he continued to serve until his second retirement. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life; Ernest was a Sargent First Class in the United States Army and United States Army Reserves during the conclusion of the Korean Conflict, embodying the values of dedication and service to his country.
An engaging personality, Ernest was known to relish the opportunity to connect with friends and family. He volunteered his time cooking for the Open Door organization and volunteering for Meals on Wheels, illustrating his caring and selfless nature.
Ernest's passions included fly fishing and turkey hunting, hobbies that brought him great joy and allowed him to foster connections with nature. He was also a dedicated member of Woodland Baptist Church, where he actively participated in the community.
The presence of Ernest Phillips will be felt deeply among all who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, both taking place at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville, North Carolina. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Ernest leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and connection, and he will be remembered fondly by his family and friends.
