Erv Rask Proud Veteran Canton – Ervin Frederick "Erv" Rask, age 94, of Lakeside Drive, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at MedWest Haywood. A native of Fords, New Jeresy, he was the son of the late Frederick and Anna Miller Rask. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Burnette Rask, who died in 2005; a son, Jeff Rask; and a brother, Ray Rask. He was a United States Army veteran serving as a Sergeant in the European Theater participating in the landing in Normandy during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star for service in Europe. He was a member of Perth Amboy Baptist Church in New Jersey. Erv was an accomplished bowler having won State Doubles tournament along with his brother, Lou and was a member of the very first Western North Carolina All Star Bowling team. In his hometown of Fords, New Jersey, Erv was owner and operator of Erv's Sweet Shop, a confectionary store that served his community. At Springdale Country Club, he served as greenskeeper with over 20 years of total service. He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Berry and her husband, Daniel, of Canton and Donna Rask of Gastonia; two sons, Bob Rask and his wife, Palma, of Milltown, New Jersey and Fred Rask and his wife, Pam, of Clyde; a brother, Lou Rask of Edison, New Jersey; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Daniel Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
