Essie Wright

June 8, 1915 — February 18, 2005

Waynesville-Essie Abel Wright, age 89, formerly of Balsam Street, died Friday, February 18, 2005 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native of Mt. City, Tennessee, she had lived in Haywood County since 1945. She was the daughter of the late Ed and Sally Greer Abel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James H. Wright, who died in 1971; a daughter, Barbara Jean Auton; two sisters, Betty Gentry and Edna Ray; and four brothers, Fred, Lillard, Carl, and James Abel. She was employed by Wellco as a packer for 31 years before her retirement. She was a member of Hazelwood Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling, playing canasta, knitting, and crochet. She is survived by a son, Johnny Wright and his wife, Patricia, of Pisgah Forest, NC; a sister, Ruby Auton, of Lenoir, NC; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Charles Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service. Members of the family will serve as pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be her grandson, S/Sg John Heath, who is presently serving in Afghanistan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Essie's memory to Hazelwood Baptist Church, 265 Hazelwood Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
