Esther Roberts

Waynesville, Esther Smathers Roberts, age 90, died on August 13, 2008 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home in Canton. Born May 9, 1918 in Canton, NC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Smathers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Underwood and Loranzo F. Smathers and two sisters, Opal S. Wilson and Lucy Norris. She is survived by one sister, Gertrude Smathers and one brother Dr. Garrett Smathers, both of Waynesville, NC. Esther served in World War II as an Army WAC Master Sergeant in the Pentagon Photographic Laboratory in Washington, DC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 2008 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend John Lindsay officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens alongside her husband, Kenneth M. Roberts, who died in 1985. Serving as pallbearers will be nephews and grand nephews. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or the Presbyterian Children's Home, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711
