Ethel Mae Payne Suttles passed away peacefully on May 1, 2016 surrounded by loved ones. Mae was born to Nathan and Violet Payne in Greenville, SC on December 20, 1922. She attended Spring Creek High School and graduated in 1939.
Mae was profoundly kind, and had a vivacious spirit. She was known for her wit, kindheartedness, and great capacity to find goodness in any she met. She played mandolin and sang old time mountain music with her sister on the Asheville Roundup Radio Show during the mid-to-late 1930's. During the Second World War she was a lab technician for the Oakridge National Laboratory. She subsequently worked as a counselor at the State of North Carolina Juvenile Evaluation Center in Swannanoa, and retired in 1987.
Mae was the most beloved mother of Jerry Suttles, Larry Suttles (Leah), Wanda Caudle, William Suttles and Sharon Allison. All of her children survive her. She is also survived by her brother, Ronnie Payne; 7 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and a large extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Louetta Etherton, Alice Feris, Lillian Wells, Lois Barger and Lena Lundy and brother, Dale Payne.
Mae's inspiring life will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Wednesday, May 4th at the Chapel of Faith, Moore Funeral Home at Forest Lawn with Rev. Lisa Hartzog-Hannah officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Verner Center of Early Learning, 2586 Riceville Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
