Evelyn Banks

Evelyn Ollie Webb Banks, age 93, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Brian Center in Waynesville. A native of Bryson City, she was the daughter of the late Josh Burton and Mintha Huskey Webb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ben Edward Banks, who died in 1978; three sisters; and a brother. She proudly earned her GED at the age of 69 and was a dedicated member of Canton Wesleyan Church. Evelyn absolutely adored children and her love of children made her a foster grandparent to many through Mountain Projects at North Canton Elementary School. She was also a talented seamstress and loved to sew. She made beautiful hand-made dolls. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jeanette Banks of Leicester; two sons, Joe Banks and his wife, Shirley of Okechobee, Florida and Jerry Banks of Waynesville; a sister, Betty Jewel Sexton and her husband, James of Asheville; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Monty Barker and Reverend Terry Penland officiating.
