Evelyn Chambers Maney, 92, peacefully passed away on April 25, 2024. She leaves behind a legacy filled with love, warmth, and cherished memories.
Born on November 10, 1931, Evelyn led a remarkable career path as an administrative assistant to George Beverly Sr., founder of Beverly Realty in Asheville. Additionally, she served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Charlotte, NC, and Jedco Construction in Raleigh, NC. She also acted as a bookkeeper for Underwood, Dills, and Associates. Her dedication, competence, and work ethic was admired by many throughout her professional journey.
Evelyn will always be remembered for her deep love of reading. Her affinity for books led her to regularly place orders at the Haywood County Public Library, where she would devour each book eagerly. Her family often found themselves picking up stacks of books to fulfill her reading appetite and, on occasion, found themselves scolded for being grammatically incorrect.
Among her proudest accomplishments was her active involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) both in Raleigh and Waynesville. Evelyn's commitment to preserving history and heritage through DAR activities showcased her unwavering dedication to her family legacy and this organization.
Evelyn's love for her children and grandchildren was unwavering, so much that she became a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church alongside her granddaughter, Merritt in 2001. Some of her fondest memories were teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to dip Fritos in peanut butter and wash it all down with a cold glass of milk. Evelyn loved sweets and in her final moments craved them. Still making it known by saying “we love sweets. Boy, do we ever!”
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Furman Lee and Wilsie Messer Chambers, her loving husband Carlton S. Maney; son Robert Scott Lance, and step-son Randy Maney.
Evelyn is survived by her son Garrett Lance (Kathy); daughter-in-law Diana Lance; step-children Rick Maney and Kim Maney Whitfield (John); grandchildren, Candice Lance, Andrew Lance (Jennifer), Merritt Lance Tongen (Mark), Johnny Whitfield, Jennifer Whitfield Travis (Jesse); great-grandchildren, Caleb and Hope McQuade, Laila and Liam Lance, Calder, Hayes, and Hattie Katherine Tongen, John Franklin and Henry Travis.
During this time of mourning, may we find solace in the wonderful memories Evelyn created, her steadfast and unwavering faith, and the love she shared with all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever treasured in our hearts.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Steve Muzio officiating. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall. A private family committal will be held prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, 368 Hazelwood Avenue, Hazelwood, NC 28738 or Friends of the Haywood County Public Library, 678 Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
