Evelyn O'Neil

Evelyn Maples O'Neil, age 90, left this earth for her heavenly home on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at her residence.

A native of Graham County, Evelyn was born April 9, 1927 and resided most of her life in Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Phil Maples and Ellen Hoyle Maples. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Gordon L. O'Neil; her second husband, William G. O'Neil; a son, Billy Gordon O'Neil; three brothers, Norman, Floyd, and Vester Maples; and an infant sister.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carolyn O. Smathers and husband, Mike, of Canton; a grandson, Heath and wife, Vickie, of Canton; a granddaughter, Laura Vandergrift and her husband, Dax, of Braden, Tennessee; a daughter-in-law, Kim O'Neil, of Gainesville, Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Toss, Ben, Taylor, Nelsie, and Mary Jane Smathers; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was a member of East Fork Baptist Church where in former years, served as Vacation Bible School director, Adult Ladies Sunday School teacher, and Young Adult Training Union teacher. She was a retiree of American Enka and was an excellent cook, seamstress, and quilter.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Cullen and Reverend Toss Smathers officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
