"1920 – 2015" Asheville – Evelynn Elaine Hill Stewart, age 95, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Ormond Beach. Evelynn was a native of Henry County, Tennessee and a daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Hill and Willie Pritchett Hill Moore. She was formerly of Asheville where she lived until moving to Holly Hill, Florida in 2012. During World War II, Evelynn served her country honorably as a member of the United States Office of Strategic Services where she received special commendations from Major General William J. Donovan, director of the O.S.S. At the conclusion of the war, the O.S.S. was later reformed into the Central Intelligence Agency as it is known today. Evelynn continued to serve her country as a federal employee with honor and distinction until her retirement from the government in 1979. Eve continued in the work force until her final retirement in 1990 at age 70. She is survived by one sister, Merle Hill Edwards of Knoxville, Tennessee; three nieces, Gwen Edwards of Asheville, Leanne Shofner Merritt of Battleground, Washington, and Tony Shofner of Bellevue, Washington; three nephews, Michael Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia, Steven Edwards of Knoxville, Tennessee, and William C. Hill, Jr. of Cordova, Tennessee; and numerous friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Nicole Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
