Florence Wells

Florence Hargrove Wells, age 102, of Hilltop Road, died Saturday, December 15, 2007, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Joe "Uncle Joe" and Mary Shook Hargrove. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Millard Wells, who died in 1995; a grandson, Eric Wells, who died in 2000; 3 brothers, Walter, Lenoir and Gus Hargrove and 3 sisters, Berlyn Scroggs, Edith Hutchins and Cora Lee Devlin. She was the oldest member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church, a 1922 graduate of Bethel High School and a graduate of Asheville Normal Teachers College. She was a teacher at Garden Creek School in the Center Pigeon Community of Haywood County. Mrs. Wells retired from Hudson's Department Store in 1965. She was survived by 2 daughters, Anna Lee Brown and Mary Hipps, both of Canton; 3 sons, Walter Wells and his wife, Dot, of Canton, Joe Wells of Canton and William Burton Wells and his wife, Pat, of Chapin, SC; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at the Chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Canton with the Reverend Tim Drum and Reverend Naomi King officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford - Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
