Floyd Cothern

June 22, 1920 — November 23, 2009

Waynesville, Floyd G. Cothern, age 89, died on Monday, November 23, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Macon County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Nathaniel Augustus and Tallie Gregory Cothern. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris Wright Cothern, and a son, Douglas Floyd Cothern. Floyd was a US Army veteran of World War II and worked as a medical technologist. He was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church and was very devoted to his faith. Floyd will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by a son, Donald Eugene Cothern, of Bryson City; one daughter, Cheryl Cothern Ward and her husband, Keith, of Sylva; a daughter-in-law, Patty Cothern Sutton, of Waynesville; a companion and great friend, Christine Coffey; one brother, Fred Cothern and his wife, Carol, of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Todd Cothern and his wife, Jessica, Ric Ward and his wife, Maria, and Heather Ward; and four great grandchildren, Kayla and Coleman Cothern and Brittney and Brock Medford. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Eddie Deitz and Reverend Ricky Mason officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jonathan Valley Baptist Church, 3817 Jonathan Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28785 or Allens Creek Baptist Church, 549 Allens Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
