Waynesville, Floyd Ray Fisher, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Mission Hospital.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Floyd Edwin and Dortha Coward Fisher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear daughter, Misty Dawn Fisher, who died in 1998.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shelby Reece Fisher; son, Dr. Philip Fisher, and his wife, Jann, of Waynesville; and grandchildren, Graham Fisher of Charlotte and Peyton Fisher of New York City.
Moving to Haywood County at an early age, Ray was a proud resident of the Fines Creek community, where he graduated from Fines Creek High School. At Fines Creek High School, he was a bus driver and played both basketball and baseball.
Ray was a man of many interests, including fishing, grouse hunting, and bear hunting. Ray retired as a supervisor at Dayco with 25 years of service and was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church. Ray helped many young men as a coach of youth baseball and basketball in the 60’s and 70’s. He even started the Haywood Babe Ruth League for local high school players to play during the summer. Ray was in his happy place seated on the tractor mowing grass at his home, or for his grandson’s baseball teams. One of Ray’s favorite activities was playing golf where he notched three holes-in-one during his time on the links. Above all else, Ray adored his family and Papaw, as he was affectionately called, traveled the country following his grandchildren’s athletic endeavors and never missed a game.
