Atlanta, Georgia- Frances Z. Layfield, age 89, died Saturday, March 17, 2007 after a brief illness at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Tucker, Georgia. She was a native of Decatur, Georgia and was a resident of Waynesville for 22 years before moving to Atlanta. She was the daughter of the late Frederick Leland and Rae Alexander Zimmerman. She is also preceded in death by her husband Pearce, who died in 1976 and a daughter, Mary Ann Layfield. She was a retired professional artist and art teacher. Frances' husband Pearce was a Methodist minister. As the Layfields moved from pastorate to pastorate, she became well known as a portrait artist, an expert in watercolor and acrylic painting, and a teacher of young people and adults. She is survived by a daughter Sue Layfield Sandell and her husband, Cliff of Decatur, Georgia; a son Pearce Hudson Layfield III and his wife, Francine of Nicholasville, Kentucky and two grandchildren, Carrie Ann Layfield of Herndon, Virginia and Katherine Ruth Layfield of Lexington, Kentucky. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Reverend Cliff Sandell and the Reverend Walter Sandell officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emory Presbyterian Church, 1886 North Decatur Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30307.
