Waynesville-Francis Evans Massie, age 94, of 111 Massie Hill Drive, died Monday, January 24, 2005 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was one of twelve children born to the late Thomas Newton Massie and Maggie Evans Massie. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smathers Massie, who died in 1989; six brothers, James E., Thomas Guy, William Lebo, Wayne Hugh, Ralph Harold, and T.N. Massie, Jr.; and four sisters, Jessie M. McCracken, Myrtle M. Ray Wagenfeld, Nora M. Reece, and Margurite M. Parkman. He attended Mars Hill College and joined the family business, Massie Furniture and Funeral Home and was active in business until 1985 as president and owner. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, having joined the church at ten years of age, and was a former Sunday School Superintendent, and president of the Men's Sunday School Bible Class and had served on numerous other board and committees of the church. He was a charter member of the Waynesville Lions Club; former member of the Board of Directors of First Union National Bank and Haywood Savings and Loan; and charter member of Haywood Rod and Gun Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He is survived by two sons, Francis Stanford Massie, M.D. of Richmond, VA and Thomas C. Massie and his wife, Nancy, both of Waynesville; a sister, Mary Emma Weatherby, of Waynesville; six grandchildren, Thomas Kevin Massie and his wife, Rebecca, and Kim Massie Shuford and her husband, Jeff, both of Waynesville, Kristy Massie Henson and her husband, Scott, of Candler, Kathy Massie Garrett and her husband, Blake, of Fountain Inn, SC, Francis Stanford Massie, Jr. M.D. and his wife, Nicole Massie, M.D. of Birmingham, AL, and Tristin Shaw Massie, PhD and his wife, Tammy, of Gaithersburg, MD; and nine great grandchildren, Megan Massie, Will Shuford, Ashley and Aaron Henson, Oakley and Wade Garrett, Francis Stanford Massie, III, Harrison Austin Massie and Madeline Amelia Massie. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells, Reverend Dr. Garland Young, and Reverend Dr. Joe Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Chuck Reece, Kip Ray, Tom Massie, Mike Leatherwood, Chuck Way, and Steve McGrew.
