Clyde-Francis Benton Smith, age 82, of 1265 Old Clyde Road, died Sunday, September 26, 2004 at Angel Medical Center in Franklin. He was a native of Greenville County, SC having lived in Haywood County since 1926. He was the son of the late Charles Paxton and Laura Darnell Smith. He was a supervisor in the print shop before retiring in 1984 after 42 years employment from Champion Paper. He was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church where he served as head usher for many years. He was an Army veteran having served in the 12th Armor Division during WWII in France and Germany and was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen Cheney Smith; a daughter, Leslie S. Hardie and her husband, Danny, of Burlington, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Reverend James Hart and Reverend Randy Tingle will officiate. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services. Memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church Bus Fund or Flood Relief Fund, P.O. Box 8, Clyde, NC 28721.
