Frank Mccollum

Waynesville, Frank Gregory McCollum, age 77, of Little Mountain Road, died on Friday, March 27, 2009 at his residence. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, he had lived in Haywood County for 26 years. He was the son of the late J.O. "Mac" McCollum and Edna Cornwall Tucker and was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nancy Katz. He was a US Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired fireman, having worked for the City of Miami Fire Department for 30 years. Gregory was an avid stamp, book, and movie collector and loved watching his favorite television shows, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He was a member of the Defenders of Wildlife and contributed to various animal shelters. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pauline S. McCollum; one daughter, Barbara Katz and her husband, Louis, of Miami, FL; one stepson, Fred Platman, of Waynesville; and two grandchildren, Michelle and Daniel Katz. No services are planned. Memorials may be made to Haywood Animal Welfare Association, P.O. Box 992, Waynesville, NC 28786.
