Fred Jaynes Ferguson, age 95, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 25, 2003. His beloved wife of 57 years, Catherine, and his grandson, John H. Ferguson, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Fred J. Ferguson, Jr. and daughter-in-law Rosemary; granddaughter Jana Ferguson Lohse, her husband Bert and their two sons Ryan and Tyler; and granddaughter, Sagan Sabatino.
Fred was a 1931 graduate of the University of North Carolina, earning a degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce and began his career in Raleigh, North Carolina where he met the love of his life, Catherine Geneva Alford.
After America entered World War II, Fred volunteered to serve his country and joined the United States Navy, where he served as a Lieutenant Commander. Fred and his family resided in Canton, North Carolina where he spent the rest of his career with Champion Paper and retired as treasurer of the Canton Mill division in 1973.
Known as a faithful servant in his community, Fred served in many positions at Central United Methodist Church in Canton, as well as serving as a town alderman, a member of the Board of Canton Savings & Loan and Centura Bank, a member of the Morehead Scholarship Selection Committee of the University of North Carolina and a lifetime Lion's Club member with over 50 years of service. Upon moving to Houston in 1993, Fred continued to serve at Bear Creek United Methodist Church and with the Bear Creek Lion's Club.
More than anything, Fred, affectionately known as "Papa", loved to serve his Lord and his family, and spending time with them was a high priority in his life. He embraced life to its fullest, always making the best of any situation, and encouraging others to do the same.
Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Papa's life on Thursday, October 30, 2003, at 4pm at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, 16000 Rippling Water, Houston, Texas 77084, followed by a covered-dish gathering in the Family Life Center.
A graveside service will be held at Bon-a-Venture cemetery, Canton, North Carolina on Sunday, November 2, 2003 at 2:30pm. The family will receive friends before the service at Wells Funeral Home, Canton, North Carolina, from 1pm to 2pm.
Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Agape Sunday School class at Bear Creek United Methodist Church.
