Fred Mitchell

Alabama- Fred Brown Mitchell, Lieutenant Colonel (U.S. Army Retired) died quietly in his sleep, Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at Athens Limestone Hospital in Athens, Alabama. He was born, September 13, 1915 in Sevier County, Tennessee. He had formerly lived in Longwood, Florida before moving to Athens. Col. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents Lavator and Josie Brown Mitchell of Canton, North Carolina; one brother Rex; four sisters Delma Patton, Ruby Goodson, Juanita Fowler and Helen Mitchell; and his loving wife of 61 years, Grace Lucille Cody Mitchell. He is survived by his brother Morris "Pete" Mitchell of Canton, North Carolina, sisters Lois Mills of Houston, Texas and Elizabeth "Libby" Gilbert of Durham, North Carolina; his son Fred Brown ("Cody) Mitchell II and wife Sandra of Athens, Alabama; three granddaughters - Barbera Perkins and husband Randy of Athens, Catherine Mitchell of Birmingham, Alabama, and Amanda Mitchell of Orlando, Florida; two great-grandchildren - Victoria "Tori" Grace Perkins and William Cody Perkins; and several nieces and nephews. Col. Mitchell faithfully served in the United States Army Chemical Corps. from 1942 until his retirement in November of 1968. At the time of his retirement he was the Senior Regular Army Advisor to the Alabama National Guard, Montgomery, Alabama. While in service he served in both the Far East and Europe. His period of service covers World War II, Korean and Viet Nam Wars. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006 at Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend David Christy officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Memorials may be made to Piney Grove Cemetery Maintenance Fund, c/o Johnny Woody, 542 Reed Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
