Frederick Smathers

"Loving Father & Granddaddy" Canton – Frederick Hargrove Smathers, 91, of the Dutch Cove community, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Oscar Charlie and Lucy Nell Hargrove Smathers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Myers Smathers, who died in 2014; a son, Jerry Smathers; a grandson, Michael "Clay" Smathers; and twin sisters, Ilene and Cessarene. Frederick was a well-known barber in Canton where he made many lasting friendships, retiring in 2009 with 63 years of service. He was an active member of Morning Star United Methodist Church. Frederick enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, especially deer hunting and riding horses. He will especially be remembered for his sweet and kind demeanor that his loved ones will cherish in their hearts forever. Frederick served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He is survived by a son, Kermit Smathers and his wife, Kathy, of Canton; four grandchildren, Matt Smathers (Brooke), Molly Carver (Chad), Cole Smathers; and Billy Carver (Mia); five great-grandchildren, Sadie and Charlotte Smathers, Hudson and Boone Carver and Lola Carver; a daughter-in-law, Susan Smathers of Canton; and one brother, Donald Smathers and his wife, Joyce, of Canton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Morning Star United Methodist Church with the Reverend Nicole Jones and Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Silver Bluff Nursing Home and The Homestead for their loving care they gave to Frederick.
