Gary Michael Poppas, born on July 28, 1951, in Haywood County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on December 22, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and a deep love for his family and friends.
A graduate of Tuscola High School in Waynesville, Gary continued his education at Haywood Community College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. He was employed as a forklift operator in the shipping department of Champion Paper and Fibre, a role that showcased his strong work ethic and dedication.
Gary had a vibrant personality that endeared him to all who knew him. An active presence on E-Bay, he enjoyed buying and selling antiques, often found at flea markets and yard sales. He had a unique gift for conversation, effortlessly engaging with people from all walks of life. Many found solace in sharing their stories with him, and his ability to listen made him a valued friend.
A devoted family man, Gary cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He created lasting memories through camping trips and family vacations to the beach, embodying the spirit of “everybody’s dad.” His hands-on approach to parenting and grandfathering was evident in his loving interactions with his children and grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marianna Kelly Poppas; son, Aaron Kelly Poppas of Canton, and his children, Kelton, Ethan, and Ava Poppas; daughter, Zoe Callard (Gary) of Nottingham, England, and their children, Leo and Lucas Callard; brother, Steve Poppas (Vivian) of Canton and their children, Nathan Poppas and Angie Pless (Steve); sister, Robin Poppas of Middle River, MD; and great-grandchildren, Vincent, Victor, and Lucian.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Steve Poppas, Bessie Jones Whitehouse, and James Whitehouse.
A memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Poppas will be held at a later date.
Gary Michael Poppas will be remembered for his generosity, ability to connect with others, and the unconditional love he offered his family. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
The care of Mr. Poppas has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
