Genevieve Mehaffey, age 91, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late David and Lilly Hall Brookshire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Mehaffey, who died in 1990; a daughter, Wanda Mehaffey Cooper; four sisters, Willie Rogers, Oma Owenby, Shirley Murphy and Edna Brookshire; and three brothers, Lamuel, Haynes and C.D. Brookshire. Genevieve was the second oldest active member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, becoming a member, June 29, 1941. She is survived by four sons, Buddy Mehaffey and his wife, Jan, of Cherokee, Wayne and his wife, Monell, Van and Maurice Mehaffey, all of Leicester; five grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Mark Parham, Nathan Quinn, Wayne Wolfe, Monty Rogers, Chad and Jason Terry.
