Canton, George I. Black, Jr., age 84, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at his residence. A resident of Haywood County for 54 years, he was the son of the late George I. Black, Sr. and Mildred Clark Black. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Anglin Black and one sister, Gene Burnheart. George served in the US Navy receiving the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troup 333. He retired from Southern Bell after 30 years of service, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Canton. George was also a member of the Canton McDonald's Club. He is survived by two sons, Scott Black and Roger Black and his wife, Robin; sister, Ann Ray; brother, Louis Black; three grandsons, Travis and his wife, Melanie, Justin and his wife, Brittany and Jarred Black; one granddaughter, Kristen Sherlin, and one expected great-grand child; 13 nieces and nephews, and several grand nieces and grand nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011 in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Matt Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice or MedWest-Haywood Homestead Hospice Center, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
