George Burnett

September 14, 1921 — July 26, 2008

Canton – George Fulton Burnett, age 86, of Daffodil Lane, Canton, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ellis and Terry Smathers Burnett. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Max Burnett. George was an employee of Champion International retiring in 1986 with 42 years of service. He was a 1938 graduate of Bethel High School and attended Bethel Baptist Church. George was a U.S. Army World War II veteran having served in the Pacific Theater. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Jennie Mae Chambers Burnett; two sons, Louie Fulton Burnett and his wife, Peggy, of Killen, Al, and Tony Burnett and his wife, Jennifer, of Park Hill, OK; one daughter, Dana Burnett Reid and her husband, First Sergeant Michael Reid, of Canton; three sisters, Peggy Erwin of Canton, Laura Boone of Asheville and Mary Wright of Charlotte; one brother, Howard Burnett of Canton; six grandchildren, Candice Nelson, Scott Moore, Carla Stamey Moore, Cody Reid, Caroline Burnett and Harrison Burnett; and one great-grandson, Jacob Moore. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Bethel Community Cemetery with military gravesite rites being conducted by the U.S. Army, V.F.W. Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. George was well loved by his family, friends, co-workers and he will be greatly missed.
