George Cochran

December 31, 1922 — December 27, 2010

Waynesville, George Buhel Cochran, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 27, 2010 at his home with his family by his side. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late John and Lizzie Higdon Cochran and was also preceded in death by five brothers, Bill, Dewey, Harley, Mann, Lee, and Zeb Cochran and two sisters, Bertha Thomas and Docia Wiggins. He was a US Army Infantry Sergeant having served during World War II and later retired from the Dayco Corporation after 43 years service. He was a member of Barberville Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was on the Building and Grounds Committee. George was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with his neighbors, friends, and anyone in need. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Guy Cochran; one daughter, Delois Masters of Marshall; three sons, John Cochran and his wife, Carlene, of the Iron Duff Community, Charles Cochran and his wife, Katherine, of Waynesville, and James Cochran and his wife, Linda, of Newport, North Carolina; one sister, Hattie Cochran, of Waynesville; one brother, Paul Cochran, of Americus, Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Ned Webb and Reverend Dr. Jack Holland officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons, Jeremy and Grant Cochran, Tommy and Chris Masters, Tommy Masters, Jr., Jonathan and Joey Justice, and Phoenix Swanger. Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Cochran, Nick Abbott, Bailey Williams, and Ethan Smoak. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
