George E. "Jim " Duncan, 73 of 37 Melrose Street, died Friday, April 29, 2005 at home surrounded by family. He was the son of the late Jerry Duncan and Elma Sparks Duncan and was also preceded in death by four brothers, Ted, Jack, Donald, and Bill Duncan. A Native of Mitchell County, North Carolina, Mr. Duncan finished high school and joined the U.S. Army. After his military service, he attended Mitchell County Business School. He started his business career with Home Finance Company in 1957 and worked with that firm for nine years including a two - year stint in Waynesville from 1959-1961. Northwestern Bank hired Mr. Duncan in 1965 where he spent most of his career eventually as Senior Vice President for the Waynesville area before leaving in1985. When Northwestern merged with another large bank, Mr. Duncan choose to move to First Citizens Bank and Trust as City Executive of Waynesville. He held that position for 5 years until he retired in 1991. During his tenure in Waynesvile, Mr. Duncan contributed to the community serving as a member of several key Haywood County organizations. At various times, he chaired the Economic Development Commission, Haywood Community College Foundation, and Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was an active member of the Greater Haywood Chamber of Commerce, United Way; Kwanis, Boosters, and Rotary Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville, where he served on several finance committees. He was an avid golfer and a member of Waynesville Country Club. Mr. Duncan had a special love for his immediate and extended family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Wiseman Duncan; son, William Mark Duncan and wife, Tracey of Raleigh; grandchildren, Rachel Anne and William O'Neal Duncan, 5 sisters, Anna Lee Pitman of Spruce Pine, Phyllis Grindstaff and her husband Jack of Bakersville, Eloise Hall and her husband Ted of Newton, Ruth Grindstaff and her husband Buster of Bakersville, and Judy Buchanan and her husband David of Spruce Pine, one brother Jerry Duncan and his wife Annette of Spruce Pine, sisters-in-law, Barbara Stogner of Spruce Pine, Lou Ellen Petterson of Bakersville, Carol and Phyllis Duncan of Spruce Pine, and many loved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the many friends, loved ones, and church family for all the love, care and prayers offered on his behalf during his illness. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the family members who helped so unselfishly in this time of need as well as for the loving service provided by the staff of Haywood County Hospice. The funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Waynesville on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Prince and Dr. Richard Maples will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm. until 3:45 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service in the chapel of First Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Bruce Norman, Bruce Powell, Lee Finger, Dean McMahan, Ray Fisher, Tom Pressley, Manuel Hooper and Darrell Tilley. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005 at Bear Creek Cemetery, Bakersville, NC.
