Canton - George Frederick Farling, Jr., 92, died at his home in Canton, NC on September 13, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Mildred ("Midge"). Their loving marriage lasted 71 years, their bond an inspiration to many. He is survived further by his son's wife Judy, his grandson Chris, as well as his grandson's wife Heather and mother Alice. Their son Robert died in 2012. George was born May 1, 1923 in Toledo, OH to George and Margaret Farling. He was the eldest brother of Fritz, Jack, and Chuck. In 1982, he retired from the Marketing Division of Marathon Oil to Springdale Country Club, where he and Midge lived among natural beauty and close community. George was a passionate golfer, even into his 90s. He had a quick wit and rare charm—a true gentleman—and lit up a room like few others. He was devoted to family and friends and kind to all. Capt. Farling was a decorated USMC fighter pilot (Black Sheep Squadron, VMF-214) in WWII and Korea, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
