Lake Junaluska, George Russell Henson, Sr., age 84, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Melvin Carnie and Florence Hardin Henson. George was a United States Battalion Sergeant Major having served in the 82nd Airborne. He was an employee of Dayco, where he retired as manager of stores of the shipping department. George was president of the Men's Democratic Club. The most precious thing in George's life was spending time with his family, and taking long lazy drives through the mountains of Western North Carolina. George enjoyed the Folkmoot festival in the summer and many years of ballroom and Western square dancing with his wife. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Hazel Palmer Henson; a daughter, Marsha Henson of Tybee Island, Georgia; a son, George Henson, Jr. of Asheville, North Carolina; a brother, Paul Henson and his wife, Rene, of Lynn Haven, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Leyton Alan Mears officiating. Burial will follow at Old Bon-A-Venture Cemetery in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
