Waynesville-George E. McAlee, age 80, of 121 Auburn Park Drive, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a caring man who was quick with a smile and a joke. He was a native of Pennsylvania, but was embraced by the people of Haywood County. He was preceded in death by a son, George E. McAlee, Jr. and a brother, Patrick and a sister, Frances. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired from the United States Marines with the rank of Major. He was employed as a banker for First Citizen, First Union, and Western Carolina banks. He was a real estate broker for Country Squire and was employed by MetLife as an insurance salesman. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, DAV, VFW Post 5202, American Legion Post 47, the Kiwanis Club, Youth for Christ, Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, and Haywood County Department of Social Services. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church serving as Eucharistic Minister and was dogmatic about visiting the sick and those in area nursing homes. He is survived by his wife of more than 59 years, Maxine; a son David McAlee of Havana, Florida; two daughters, Mary Underwood, and her husband, John, of Waynesville and Maureen McAlee of Winston-Salem; and five grandsons, Brent, Ryan, Jeremy, Scott, and Drew. His family will celebrate his life and receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 9 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801 or to one's favorite charity.
