Arden, N.C. - George Neil McCracken, 89, passed away August 2, 2017 at the Solace Center, Asheville, N.C.

He was a native of Haywood County, and son of the late Kate and Goble McCracken. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Joe, and Lane McCracken and his grandson, Russell Kagan McCracken.

He is survived by his son, Elliott and his wife, Angela K. McCracken and their daughter, Ashley Katelyn McCracken. His daughter, Rocky Marco and her children Garrett and Charlotte Marco of Oregon, his daughter, Neila Childers and her son, Jamie Childers of Atlanta, Georgia; his step-son, Gene Riddle and his daughter, Morgan of Asheville; the love of his life, Judy, and her children, Shelly, Jason, Jody and Billy.

He was a graduate of Canton High School and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy as Machinists Mate 3-1. Upon coming home, he started McCracken and Wood Country Store with a life-long friend, Thomas S. Wood on Newfound. Acquiring a passion for trucks and the open road which led to a lifelong career in the trucking business. His interest were the community Heritage and the people of Appalachia. He loved his Atlanta Braves Baseball and had acquired an interest in football alongside his son. He was a lifelong member of Plains United Methodist Church and Pigeon River Masonic Lodge No. 386 A.F. & A.M.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Zach Christy officiating with military honors conducted by the United States Navy. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening.
