George Philmore Messer Sr., age 78, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at CarePartners Solace Center.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Edith Wyatt Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Williams Messer who died in 2007; sister, Ruby Goodson Messer; brother, Charles David Messer; son, Matthew A. Messer; stepdaughter, Vickie Conner; and stepson, Ricky Conner. George retired in 2006 after 23 years with Haywood Community College. He was a member of Burnette Cove Baptist Church. George enjoyed sitting on his porch with his dogs, playing in a bluegrass/gospel band, he enjoyed listening to music and being outdoors.
George is survived by three sons, Phil Messer, and his wife, Cathy, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Avery Messer, of Waynesville and Eddie Messer, and his wife, Sharon, of Candler; stepson, Richard Conner, and his wife, Kim; sister, Marshall Messer, of York, South Carolina; two brothers, Carroll Wayne Messer, of Waynesville and Howard "Bo" Messer, of Balsam; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fulbright Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The care of Mr. Messer has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
