George Race

Maggie Valley, George T. Race, 84, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Jerome, Pennsylvania and resident of Clearwater, Florida, he was also a summer resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Joseph and Bertha Race and was also preceded in death by his brother and sister. He was a US Navy veteran and later employed at GTE for 25 years, retiring in 1992. George loved to go sailing, ride Harley Davidson motorcycles, and go RVing. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Gulf Beach Lodge 291 and also a member of Maggie Valley United Methodist Church. George is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carolyn "Rusti" Buchanan Race; two daughters, Donna Springer of Buford, Georgia and Melinda Kane and her husband, Joe, of Clearwater, Florida; four sons, Stephen Race of Springfield, Missouri, David Hardy and wife, Libby, of Portland, Oregon, Charles Hardy and wife, Samantha, of Roswell, Georgia and Albert Hardy of Clearwater, Florida; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Maggie Valley United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard Buff officiating.
