George Smathers

Canton-George Wiley Smathers-age 94, formerly of Rhoda Street, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the son of the late George R. and Sarah Everhart Smathers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Kinsland Smathers who passed away in 2001.

He was an active member of Morning Star United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Champion Papers where he worked for 41 years.

He is survived by his two daughters, Lou Ellen Arrington of Clyde and Maryanne Brewer of Fort Lauderdale, FL; three grandchildren; Daniel and Cynthia Arrington of Clyde and Jaime Brewer of Orlando, FL.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Doug Love officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morning Star United Methodist Church, 2535 Dutch Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716.
