George Songer, Sr.

July 27, 1927 — August 27, 2005

Waynesville-George Leslie Songer, Sr., age 78, of 626 Pot Leg Road, died on Saturday, August 27, 2005 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA. He was born in Dade County, FL and was the son of the late Nuel N. and Helena Ridenhour Songer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Nuel Songer. He was a graduate of Miami Senior High School and attended the University of Miami. He was a part time employee of Gearhart Funeral Home in Miami prior to joining the military where he served in the US Army during World War II. Following his military career, he attended mortuary science school in St. Louis, Missouri in 1951. He then returned to Miami and later joined the staff of Branam Funeral Home in Homestead, FL. He was a retired manager of Branam Funeral Home with 38 years service. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Royal Palm Lodge 100 in Homestead, FL and was also a member of the Mahi Shrine Temple in Miami. He was a former member of Homestead United Methodist Church and was currently a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church of Waynesville. He was also a member of the Waynesville Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Madeline Melton Songer; a daughter, Sarah Songer Rawlins and her husband, Jeff, of Lawrenceville, GA; a son, George Leslie Songer, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Suwannee, GA; a sister, Phyllis Songer Colby and her husband, Wendell, of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Heather Torii and her husband, Tadashi, and Kelly Rawlins, all of Lawrenceville, GA and Matthew Songer of Suwannee, GA; and two great grandchildren, Kenzo and Mayuko Torii. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August, 31, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend J. Linwood Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by the Waynesville Masonic Lodge 259 AF&AM. The Lodge will open at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.
