Canton - George "Speedy" Stamey, age 77, of Lane Street died Friday, January 2, 2004 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Mardy and Claudia Estella Hall Stamey. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy. He was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame. Speedy played for the old Champions of Canton team prior to going into service during World War II. Upon his return, he resumed playing with them until his retirement in 1957. He was selected All-State four times, All-Regional four times and All-American once. His amazing speed complimented his strong fielding and outstanding hitting. His quickness as well as his speed made him one of the most feared baserunners during his time. His lifetime batting average was .273. He was a member of Rescue Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Ileta Hall Stamey, he is survived by two daughters, Carole Hyatt and her husband, Bobby and Montene Williams and her husband, Troy; a son George "Bucky" Stamey and his wife, Helen, all of Canton; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Newfound Road, Canton with the Reverend Darrell Webb officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. prior to the services at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
