George Stubbs

Waynesville, NC, Dr. George Middleton Stubbs, age 92, of Waynesville, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at his residence after a lengthy illness. A native of Putnam County Georgia, he was the son of the late Roy Davis Stubbs and Georgia Smith Stubbs. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Brevard N. Stewart and Elaine S. Mitchell and one brother, Rob Roy Stubbs. Dr. Stubbs attended the University of Virginia where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and graduated from Emory University Medical School in 1943. During WWII, Dr. Stubbs served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, assigned to The Pacific Theater as a physician. He took his surgical training at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA from 1947 until 1951. He practiced surgery for 36 years with Riverside Clinic and Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, where he served as president for 25 years of Riverside Clinic. Dr. Stubbs retired in 1987. After his retirement, he served as Surgical Consultant for Humana Health Insurance Company for 20 years. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgery, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida, Jacksonville. Dr. Stubbs was an honorary life member and past president of Timuquana Country Club, a member of Ponte Vedra Club, and a member of Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Beverly Saar Stubbs; two daughters, Rowena Woodworth and her husband, Pat, of Winona, Minnesota and Virginia Gregg of Gainesville, Florida; one grandson, Zeba Solomon, his wife Theresa and two great-grandchildren, Shea and Angelica all of Mt. Dora, Florida; and 2 nieces and 7 nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida wtih Reverend Carol DiGiusto officiating. In lieu, of flowers memorials may be made to Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 S. Third Street, Jacksonville, FL 32250, The Mayo Clinic Foundation, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224, or Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
