Georgia Hamlett

Canton – Georgia Cordell Hamlett, 94, passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.

Georgia was a native of Haywood County and a daughter of the late George and Harriett Franklin Cordell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ralph Hamlett, former Canton Chief of Police, who died in 1997; a son, Gerald B. Hamlett; and five siblings.

Georgia was a graduate of Canton High School, formerly employed as a supervisor with Fairfield garments and formerly employed at Charles D. Owen Manufacturing and Burlington.  Mrs. Hamlett was also a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed raising her three sons, cooking and taking in seamstress work for members of the community.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served as Vacation Bible School Director, Sunday school teacher and choir member for 60 years.

She is survived by two sons, Reverend Gary D. Hamlett and wife, Cathy, of Rome, Georgia and Dr. Ralph A. Hamlett and wife, Susan, of Canton; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Nathan Murray officiating.  Mrs. Hamlett will lie in state for personal visitation Monday morning, March 15, 2021 through Wednesday morning, March 17, 2021 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.  The family will greet their guests following the service at the cemetery.
