Georgia Herren Smathers, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at her residence. A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late George and Missouri Rogers Herren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her husband, John Earl Smathers, who died in 1992 and a daughter, Jill Smathers Emerson, who died in 1976. Georgia retired from American Enka in 1980 and was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Electa Chapter #228, having served as secretary and Worthy Matron. She is survived by two sons, Kevin E. Smathers, of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Michael H. Smathers and his wife, Cindy, of Arden; one sister, Anna Dee Davis of Candler; one granddaughter, Brynne Smathers Williams and her husband, Renwick; two great-granddaughters, Kadyn Georgia and Karrington Loughran Williams; and one step-granddaughter, Shannon Quinn. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Snow Hill United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Peeler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The B.E.A.R. Closet of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, 84 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.
