Geraldine Smith

Geraldine Smith, born on April 5, 1936, in Haywood County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 7 2025, at Silver Bluff Village in Canton, North Carolina. Her life was full of love, devotion, and care for her family, which she held dear above all.

Geraldine enjoyed a fulfilling career at Zachary's men's store in Asheville as an assistant manager. In this role, she demonstrated her remarkable ability to connect with people by measuring them to fit into fine clothing, showcasing her eye for detail and commitment to service.

A devoted family member, Geraldine cherished gathering her loved ones together for holidays, when she would lovingly prepare meals that resonated with warmth and tradition. Her passion for cooking was matched only by her love of reading; she always surrounded herself with books and enjoyed sharing this joy with her granddaughter, taking her to the library each week to explore new stories together.

Geraldine had a lively spirit and an engaging personality. She was respectful, loving, and caring, making her a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her. Her passions extended to sports, where she was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and Duke’s basketball teams, fervently cheering for their victories. She had a green thumb, nurturing her flowers with the same affection she offered to her family.

She held her faith close; Geraldine was a longtime member of the Baptist community, finding solace and strength in her beliefs throughout her life.

She is survived by her children, James Robbie Thompson (Thelma) of Aiken, SC, Reneé Lynnette Thompson (Eddie) of Canton, and Tamara Medford (Gene) of Clyde; and her grandchildren, Steven Dalton Thompson (Catherine) of Charlotte, and Dominique Medford (Andrew) of Clyde.

Geraldine was predeceased by her parents, James Smith and Margaret Gladys Smathers Smith; her son, Terry Dale Thompson (2020); her grandson, Bryan Austin Thompson; and her infant brother, James Robbie Smith.

A private funeral service will be held at Wells Funeral Home in Canton, with interment at Old Thickety Cemetery in Clyde.
