Gertrude Hardin

July 5, 1920 — October 29, 2008

Gertrude Mangogna Hardin, age 88, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Brian Center in Hendersonville. A native of New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine Mangogna. She was preceded in death by her husband, DeVere L. Hardin; three brothers, Peter, James, and Frank Mangogna; four sisters, Margaret DeSio, Betty Budzinski, Sally Schuman, and Ann Budzinski; and her mother and father in-law, Rufus and Wilma Hardin. Gertrude was born and raised in New York, NY, she married DeVere Hardin of Canton in 1943 while he was stationed at Mitchell Field NY during World War II. She moved to the Bethel community near Canton in 1949 with her husband and first son Douglas, where she adapted to the south extremely well, considering all she ever knew was NY and she missed her family there. Her second son, Kenneth, was born there in 1954. She made many friends in the Bethel community while living there for 34 years and was involved with supporting the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Bethel School , and Lions Club, along with her friends and neighbors. After her husband, DeVere passed away in 1981, she relocated to Brevard in 1983, where she lived for 23 years, again making many more friends and enjoying her new life there. While in Brevard, she stayed very active in volunteering for community organizations such as the Brevard Presbyterian Church, the Translyvania County Hospital, and Good Will. When she became ill and could no longer live alone, she moved to the Brian Center in Hendersonville, NC in 2006 to be close to her son, Kenneth, where she resided until her death. Gertrude was a loving wife and mother, who was always willing to make personal sacrifices for others. She was always happy and had a positive attitude, regardless of the circumstances. She made friends easily, as she never met a stranger. She is loved and will be missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by a two sons, Kenneth J. Hardin of Hendersonville and Colonel Douglas L. Hardin and his wife, Carol, of Niceville, FL; two sisters-in-law, Frances Mangogna, of Clearwater, FL and Maxine DeWeese of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, Robert Satterfield of Candler; and 12 nephews and nieces in NC, NY, FL, AZ, MS, NM, and KS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
