Gertrude Smathers

Waynesville, Gertrude Elizabeth Smathers, age 88, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Adeline Deaver Smathers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Underwood, Loranzo, and Garrett Smathers and three sisters, Opal Wilson, Lucy Norris, and Esther Roberts. She was manager of Norris Rental Properties and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville. Gertrude was an avid reader and always kept an immaculate home. She also loved traveling and gardening and enjoyed playing bingo while at Autumn Care. She is survived by her nephews, Bill Norris and Bob Smathers, both of Waynesville, Pat Smathers and his wife, Sherry, and Mike Smathers and his wife, Cindy, all of Canton, and Jimmy Beck and his wife, Helen, of Asheville; nieces, Joyce Dean Winiariski, Nancy Hall and Dr. Lorne Hall; and several great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend John Lindsay officiating. Private interment services will be held at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
