Gilbert Schenkel

Clyde-Gilbert Jerome "Gil" Schenkel, age 83, of 554 Quail Cove Road, died on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Jacksonville, FL, he was the son of the late Jacob P. and Lucille Wagner Schenkel. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Schenkel. He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army and Army Reserves having served 38 years and was a veteran of World War II. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville and his Masters Degree in Education from Florida State University. He was employed as administrator of Florida Community College for 19 years and retired in 1985. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus and loved fishing. He was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lavonta Hockett Schenkel; four daughters, Katharine E. Wehrmann and Susan R. Robinson and husband, Tom, of Jacksonville, FL, Ann Sheehan and husband, Jack, of Oldsmar, FL and Lavonta Sue Caldwell and husband, Bobby, of Orange Park, FL; one son, Steve Schenkel, of Jacksonville, FL; one sister-in-law, Lillian Schenkel; and nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Katharine, and Ashley Wehrmann, Kirsten Ireson and husband, Jason, Alyce Steil and husband, Doug, Todd Robinson, Michael and Patrick Sheehan, and Luella Caldwell. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Dennis McGowan officiating. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL.
